VOCAL SYLLABUS, MACARTHUR DISTRICT EISTEDDFOD, 2008.

Dates: October 4/5/6, 2008  NB: This is a Holiday Long Weekend
Venue: Campbelltown Performing Arts High School Beverley Road, Campbelltown.

Competitors are welcome to bring their own accompanist, Normal Venue Entry Fees apply.
PLEASE NOTE: THERE IS NO REHEARSAL TIME ALLOCATED DURING THE EISTEDDFOD.
4.   The official accompanists
will only be available if specifically requested on the entry form. If you do not have a rehearsal with Mr Tapscott or Mr Glen please ensure that a copy of ALL music is forwarded to them prior to the event so that they may practice.
5.   All sections are for male and female voices.
6.   Time limits will be adhered to and must include any discussion with the pianist if you have not had a rehearsal. Please have a legible and easy to follow copy of the music for the accompanist, preferably the original score.
7.   Unless otherwise specified, a copy of the score must be handed in for the adjudicator.
8.   SONG CHOICE, COSTUME AND PRESENTATION SHOULD BE APPROPRIATE FOR THE COMPETITOR’S AGE.
9.   Popular Song: any song from the Rock, Hip Hop or similar musical genres. PLEASE NOTE: PLEASE CHOOSE CAREFULLY AS INDECENT OR HIGHLY SUGGESTIVE SONGS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.
THESE SECTIONS ARE THE ONLY ONES IN WHICH BACKING TAPES AND MICROPHONES MAY BE USED DURING PERFORMANCE.
IF A COPY OF THE SCORE IS UNAVAILABLE, PLEASE PROVIDE A COPY OF THE LYRICS.

10. If you decide to perform a modern song in any general section, then you must be accompanied by some type of instrument. BACKING TAPES MAY NOT BE USED EXCEPT IN THE SPECIFIED SECTIONS.
11. Modern Popular and Country Music sections may not be used as qualifying entries for championships
12. Competitors MUST NOT perform the same song in more than one section.
13. Cash prizes may be withheld if there are insufficient funds or insufficient entries in any given section.
14. Photocopies for the adjudicator will not be returned in compliance with copyright laws. All performances (including the accompanist’s copy should be the original score or a certified copy if the original is no longer available.

15. Australian song
means any song written by an Australian composer. If in doubt as to the nationality of the composer, please contact the Australian Music Centre on 02 92474677 or 1300 651 834

GLOSSARY OF TERMS FOR VOCAL SECTIONS
Amateur Status:

An Amateur is defined as any person whose main source of income is not derived from any exercise of their talents in the particular discipline for which they have entered. This rule does not apply to accompanists or conductors.
Australian Song:
Any song written by an Australian born composer. (If in doubt competitors need to call the Australian Music Centre for advise on (02) 9247 4677 or 1300 651 834.
Folk Song:
Can be of any Nationality.
Lied:
Lied to be sung German: singer only to be judged.
Macarthur Singers Award:
Competitors to be under 21 years of age and must reside in the Macarthur area  i.e. within the boundaries of Campbelltown, Camden or Wollondilly Council areas.
Music Theatre/Film in Costume:
This includes Musical Comedy or any Musical Stage or Film Production.
Own Choice:
The competitor’s selection of a song.
Sacred Song:
Any song with a religious content.

OWN COMPOSITION
Section 750
Cash Prize $30
Entry Fee: $10 Time Limit 6 min. Must be the entrant’s own original work. This Section is open to any instrument(s) or voice, either Solo or ensemble, and is to be Performed and Judged during the Piano Sections.

 

OPEN SECTIONS
Open to all ages
966: ENSEMBLE SINGING – open to any age, between four and fifteen voices. Two contrasting songs, may be Accompanied or a capella
NB: Section 967 IS OPEN TO ANY CHURCH, GOSPEL OR COMMUNITY CHOIR, NO AGE LIMIT.
THIS SECTION WILL BE HELD IN OCTOBER DURING THE VOCAL COMPETITION AND NOT during the SCHOOL CHOIR SECTIONS

967: COMMUNITY OR ADULT CHOIRS – two contrasting songs or one medley for any number of voices.
Time limit: 8 minutes

 
Section 901: MACPAS VOCAL AWARD
Entry fee: $30
        1st prize: $600; 2nd prize: $300; 3rd prize: $100

        Dress: Formal – this will apply to the heats this year and will be considered
        in the overall presentation.
Rules:
1.   Competitors will be required to prepare three (3) Vocal Works for this
      section –
      a) A 18th/19th century composition
      b) A 20th/21st century composition from the classical repertoire
       and the 3rd an Aria.
       The Aria chosen must have a preceding accompanying Recitative that
       should be sung.  The first two selections will be sung in the heats, with the
       chosen finalists performing the Aria at the Finals. All pieces will be own
       choice.
2.   Previous 1st prize winners are not eligible to compete for two consecutive
      years.
3.   The number of finalists will be at the adjudicator’s discretion.
4.   Competitors must enter and compete in at least two other sections plus
      their appropriate Age Championship in order to qualify.
5.   The Finals will be held Sunday 2nd November, 2008
6.   NB: There is no age restriction for this award – the only restriction is the
      one noted in point number 2.

Section 902: Open Championship
Open to any age. To be eligible, competitors must enter and compete in at least two other Open Solo sections.
Entry fee: $15. Time limit: 10 minutes
1st prize: $100 plus trophy
     Competitors to perform two pieces:
1) Lied, Aria or Art Song
2) Own choice, must be contrasting.

Section 903: Lied
Entry fee: $10 Time limit: 5 minutes
1st prize: $50 plus trophy
Lied is to be sung in German; singer only to be judged.

910: Country Music. Competitors may be self-accompanied, use the official accompanist or use a backing tape in this section. A written copy of at least the words must be available for the adjudicator.
911: Modern Popular. Competitors may be self-accompanied, use the official accompanist or use a backing tape in this section. A written copy of at least the words must be available for the adjudicator.
TIME LIMITS FOR SECTIONS 904 – 911: 5 MINUTES.
912:
Duet or Trio
913: Vocal Ensemble – any voice combination, between four and ten voices.
Time limit: 6 minutes

Section 914: Senior Championship
Age: 21 years & under.
To be eligible, competitors must enter and compete in at least two other Senior Solo sections.
Entry fee: $15. Time limit: 10 minutes
1st prize: $100 plus trophy
Competitors to perform two pieces:
1)
Lied, Aria or Art Song
2)
own choice, must be contrasting to first song

Section 915: Macarthur Singers Award
Proudly sponsored by the Macarthur Singers, Camden, this award is restricted to entrants residing in the Macarthur district (Campbelltown, Camden and Wollondilly local government areas). Last year’s winner is not eligible to enter in 2008.  
Entry fee: $15 Time limit: 8 minutes
1st prize: $100; 2nd prize: $60; 3rd prize: $40
Competitors to perform two pieces:
1) Lied or Art Song
2) own choice, must be contrasting to first song

INTERMEDIATE SECTIONS
Section 925: Intermediate Championship
Age: 16 years & under. To be eligible, competitors must enter and compete in at least two other Intermediate Solo sections.
Entry fee: $12. Time limit: 8 minutes
1st prize: $60 plus trophy
Competitors to perform two pieces:
1) Folk Song
2) Own choice, must be contrasting.

935: Welsh Song Section.
Entry fee:
$20
Sponsored by the Y Gronfa, the Welsh Cultural Foundation of Australia
1st prize: $200; 2nd prize: $50; 3rd prize: $20.
Two songs, both of which should be Welsh in origin, with at least one to be sung in the Welsh language.
Assistance with Welsh pronunciation is available.
